TRAGEDY struck Russian sport today as a top ice hockey club was virtually wiped out in plane crash.

Russian authorities have confirmed 40 people died in the crash, which happened this afternoon when a YAK-42 passenger jet took off from the town of Yaroslavl, north of Moscow.

Lokomotive Yaroslavl has confirmed its entire first team squad was onboard. One player and a crew member are the only survivors – their condition is critical.

The team is among the top sides in Russia and contained players from eight countries.

Internationals from Russia, Germany, Sweden, Poland, the Ukraine and reigning world champions the Czech Republic are thought to be among the dead.

Reports are emerging that the plane caught fire while attempting take-off, struggled to gain altitude before crashing into a runway beacon.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is travelling to the site of the crash, while Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has sent his transport minister to begin an investigation.

The tragedy is reminiscent of the 1958 Munich Air Disaster, which saw eight members of Sir Matt Busby’s young Manchester United side killed, along with 15 others.

The start of Eastern Europe’s Kontinetal Hockey League season is likely to be postponed as players and fans come to terms with the disaster.
